Keith Jones scored 26 seconds into overtime and John Vanbiesbrouck made 25 saves in his return to South Florida as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Panthers, 2-1, Sunday night at Sunrise, Fla.
Eric Lindros assisted on both Philadelphia goals, stealing the puck from Robert Svehla behind the net for the game-winner. Lindros sent the puck in front to Jones, who fired past Kirk McLean for his fifth goal of the season.
Ed Jovanovski scored Florida’s lone goal, a breakaway as he exited the penalty box in the final minute of the first period. But the Panthers (6-7-5) repeatedly were frustrated in the third period by Vanbiesbrouck, the team’s heart and soul for its first five seasons in the NHL.
New Jersey 5, Carolina 2--Bobby Holik had a goal and an assist and the New Jersey Devils took over first place in the NHL’s Atlantic Division at Greensboro, N.C. The game began a five-game trip for the Devils, who won for the 10th time in their last 14 games.
