Golden West Advances in Volleyball

Lori Daedelow had 14 kills, Charnette Fair had 13 and Carla Miali contributed 48 assists for Golden West, which beat Cypress, 15-5, 15-7, 15-3, in the first round of the Southern California women’s volleyball playoffs Tuesday.
Jessica Miles had 10 kills for host Cypress (9-10) in its first playoff appearance.
Golden West (22-0) will host Ventura in the second round Saturday.
In another first-round match:
Saddleback 3, Cerritos 0--Kelly Webb had 10 kills, Gina Stivers had eight and Jamie Fowler had three aces for Saddleback (20-4), which won, 15-0, 15-1, 15-3. The Gauchos host the winner of Cuesta and San Diego Mesa in the second round Saturday.
In nonconference men’s basketball:
Fullerton 79, Southwestern 68--Rashaun Thomas made three of five three-point attempts and finished with 16 points for host Fullerton (5-2). Jerry McNair contributed 15 points and Karl Gregory had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Hornets.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Irvine Valley 68, Southwestern 40--Phouangmaly Pravongviengkham had 17 points, seven assists and seven rebounds to lead Irvine Valley (4-0).
