Local Golfers Don’t Match Up at Florida Junior Tournament

Candie Kung of Fountain Valley, Angela Rho of Fullerton and Brian Sinay of Irvine were eliminated in match play Thursday at the AJGA Junior Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Kung won her first match Thursday, 4 and 3, over Jamie Kim of Beverly Hills but lost to Hana Kim of Los Angeles, 2 and 1.
Rho beat Maria Garcia-Estrada of Spain, 4 and 2, then was eliminated by Jimin Kang of Edmonds, Wash., 2 and 1.
Sinay lost, 3 and 1, to Spain’s Ramon Bescansa.

Volleyball player Misty May, last year’s NCAA player of the year, will have her jersey (No. 5) retired at Long Beach State’s regular-season finale against Illinois State Saturday at the Pyramid.
May, a senior setter who graduated from Newport Harbor, has led the 49ers, the top-ranked team in the nation, to a 27-0 record this season. Match time is 7:30 p.m.

Jarrett Jensen and Erik Smith have committed to play volleyball at UC Irvine.
Jensen, a senior at Encinitas La Costa Canyon High School, is considered one of the top setters in the nation. He is expected to be named among Volleyball Magazine’s Fab 50 this year.
Smith, a setter from Los Alamitos High School, was an first-team All-Sunset League last season.
