Starr: Boller Better of Best

Taft Coach Troy Starr hasn’t changed his opinion of who’s better, quarterback J.P. Losman of Venice or Kyle Boller of Hart, after facing Losman on Wednesday in the City championship quarterfinals.

“I think Losman is truly outstanding, but Kyle is still the best I’ve seen,” Starr said.

Next up for the Toreadors is a semifinal rematch against Dorsey next Friday. Taft beat Dorsey, 21-0, earlier this season.

“They’re a lot better than Game 3 and so are we,” Starr said.

Starr admits Banning remains the favorite to win the City title.

“Banning is head and shoulders above everybody else,” he said.

Digital woes: Hueneme fans couldn’t have been heartened by the sight of Keary Colbert in street clothes Friday during the Vikings’ Southern Section Division IV quarterfinal game at San Marcos.

Colbert injured a pinkie finger in last week’s victory over Righetti and it was initially diagnosed as a dislocation.

An X-ray Monday, however, revealed the finger to be broken. A pin was inserted into the finger during an hourlong surgery Wednesday and Hueneme Coach Larry Miller said Colbert’s status is up in the air.

“We thought about having him dress and use him as a decoy but we decided it was better just to utilize our depth,” Miller said.

Colbert, who had caught 31 passes for 769 yards and nine touchdowns, said he would be out six to eight weeks. Miller, however, said he thought Colbert might play next week.

“The swelling’s gone down and he may be able to just tape his fingers together,” Miller said.

Recurring injury: Lancaster High was without leading rusher Danny Pagnella for Friday night’s second-round Division III playoff game against Alemany.

Pagnella was sidelined with an injured Achilles’ tendon that caused him to miss the last two games of the regular season. The senior running back played sparingly in the Eagles’ first-round game against Canyon last week, gaining 26 yards in seven carries.

Catching up: Lancaster hadn’t gained a yard passing its previous three games, but quarterback Jason Jacobs threw twice on the Eagles’ first possession Friday night against Alemany, completing one pass for one yard.

Jacobs was two of seven for 11 yards in the first half.
