Red Wings Win Behind Osgood

DETROIT — Chris Osgood stopped 34 shots for his 21st career shutout and Brendan Shanahan scored his fifth goal of the season Sunday as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Calgary Flames, 2-0.

Mathieu Dandenault also scored for the Red Wings, who have won four in a row since a season-opening loss at Toronto.

Osgood is 12-4-4 with three shutouts in his career against the Flames, who are 0-6-2 against the Red Wings since last beating Detroit on Oct. 11, 1996.

The Flames (1-2-1), playing the first game of a four-game trip, outshot Detroit, 34-28, but were frustrated by Osgood.

Osgood was at his best when, with Detroit already leading, 2-0, with 5:28 remaining, the Red Wings’ Aaron Ward was sent off for a major penalty as well as a game misconduct. But Osgood made four good saves--including a point-blank stop of Clarke Wilm--to preserve the shutout.

“I really don’t know if you can say the power play failed us, because we had the puck the whole time,” Calgary coach Brian Sutter said. “The guy in the net was very good. He made some very good saves.”

Shanahan gave Detroit a 2-0 lead when his wrist shot from the left slot beat goalie Ken Wregget 8:21 into the third period.
