City May Seek Funds for Housing Units

The City Council on Wednesday will consider applying for $1 million in federal funds to build 10 affordable housing units.
The city, in cooperation with Cabrillo Economic Development Corp., would apply for federal financing through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Through the program, cities are required to match at least 25% of the funding, so Camarillo would provide $277,421 from property taxes and receive $50,000 from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco.
The city and Cabrillo want to build a three-unit expansion of affordable housing at the Casa Velasquez apartments on the corner of Barry and Fulton streets, a three-unit project on the northwest corner of Daily Drive and Raemere Street, two units on the southwest corner of Barry Street and North Glenn Drive, and a two-unit project on the northeast corner of Daily Drive and Mobil Avenue.
Cabrillo project manager Jesse Ornelas said the units would rent for $490 per month for a two-bedroom apartment and $560 a month for three bedrooms.
Ornelas said construction could begin by April and the units could be available by next November.
