Led by running back George Witter’s two touchdown runs, Harvard-Westlake High scored the last 21 points and defeated Channel Islands, 28-13, Saturday in a nonleague opener at Harvard-Westlake.
Trailing, 13-7, with two seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Wolverines pulled to within four when the Raiders snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt play for a safety.
Harvard-Westlake ran the ensuing kickoff to the Raiders’ 37-yard line and seven plays later Lerato Simelane scored from three yards to give the Wolverines a 15-13 lead.
After an interception by Andrew Becket, Harvard-Westlake scored again when Alex Holmes caught a 46-yard pass from Matt Felder. Holmes was the leading receiver with five catches for 111 yards and Felder finished seven of 12 for 124 yards.
Witter, the game’s leading rusher, carried 13 times for 93 yards and scored from six yards in the second quarter and from 14 yards late in the fourth quarter.
Channel Islands running back Russell Patton gained 53 yards in 22 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of two and one yards. Patton also caught two passes for 53 yards.
