The city expects things to be running smoothly when the offices reopen Jan. 3, despite fears of widespread computer meltdowns caused by the changeover to the year 2000.
Deputy City Manager Rick Howard said the city began upgrading its software with an eye on the millennium back in 1996.
Since the city’s computer systems are not too old, city officials were able to ensure they were ready for the big date change during normal maintenance and upkeep, Howard said, adding that city officials waited for Y2K-compliant software to hit the market before making major upgrades in a number of areas.
