More than 800 junior high and high school girls filed into Plummer Auditorium on Thursday morning to hear Monica Williams Phillips, senior vice president and treasurer for Sanwa Bank California, speak. Phillips was the keynote speaker at the 15th annual American Assn. of University Women Careers in Mathematics and Science conference.
The participants then attended a series of 40-minute workshops, from meeting with a veterinarian, physicist and economist to tips on applying to college. The conference exposed young women to careers that require mathematical and scientific training, careers in which women are largely underrepresented, said organizer Wilma Saur.
