Starr Wins Right to Control Evidence

Independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr won a court fight in Alexandria, Va., to keep much of the evidence secret for now in an obstruction case stemming from his investigation of President Clinton. Starr’s office argued there is a danger that evidence provided to defendant Julie Hiatt Steele could be funneled to targets of the continuing investigation. Steele’s lawyers contended that Starr is trying to muzzle her from speaking out about what they consider a “politically motivated” prosecution. Starr has been investigating a possible cover-up involving the accusation that Clinton made an unwanted sexual advance toward former White House volunteer Kathleen Willey.
