Mexico Memories

I was so pleased to see the article “To Mexico, With Sketchbook” (Jan. 10). I was one of the fortunate folks to have gone on Jim and Sandra Bagnall’s first trip to San Miguel de Allende, and it was one of the best vacation experiences I have ever had!
I was very concerned about my lack of “drawing skills” but thought I would give it a try. There were lots of jokes on the airplane about drawing stick figures, bottles of white-out, etc., but imagine my surprise when I actually did well after a few days of instruction.
The town is so incredibly scenic that it is hard not to find something interesting to draw. I recommend this trip to anyone with a sense of adventure and the desire to try something new.

The story brought back such happy memories of my many stays in San Miguel de Allende.
I had almost forgotten about 1987, when I too stayed at La Mansion del Bosque. I was there the next year as well, and was greeted by Ruth Hyba, who apparently is still flourishing.
I was reminded of some other favorite activities. One was the Sunday home and garden tour sponsored by the English-language library, supported mainly by American expatriates. And there was El Pegaso, a small shop near the post office, crowded with native handicrafts and selling made-to-order clothes of hand-woven fabrics at modest prices.
I think it’s time for me to make a return trip.
