More than 215 elementary students trooped into Wilson and Killybrooke elementary schools Wednesday for the district’s first-ever intensive summer reading academy. The state-funded program, which has arrived in almost every school district in California this summer, is part of Gov. Gray Davis’ much-heralded--and much-debated--education program.

The program also includes intensive afternoon training to help teachers do a better job of figuring out why their students are failing and what they can do to help them. In addition, adult-education teachers are offering English classes to parents who do not speak the language.
