WEST COVINA — Police officers continued their investigation Tuesday into the accidental death of a 2-year-old girl who was shot by her 5-year-old brother after he found a shotgun under their uncle’s bed.
Detectives will present their report this week to the district attorney’s office, which will decide whether to charge the uncle, said West Covina Lt. Mark Dettor. No arrests were made, and the uncle’s name was not released.
The girl, Victoria Washington, and her family were at her uncle’s home in the 1300 block of East Maplegrove Street in West Covina on Saturday afternoon when the brother found the loaded shotgun, Dettor said.
The boy shot Victoria in the stomach, said Officer Rudy Lopez. Her family called 911, but quickly hung up. Dispatchers called the number back and were told about the incident.
Paramedics took the girl, who was five days away from her third birthday, to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, where she died.
