Two Opinions on Three Strikes

Re “Rally Calls Foul on ‘Three Strikes,’ ” March 8:
A woman is protesting the three-strikes law because her three-time-felon son is in jail “with murderers and rapists”?
Perhaps both of them should have thought about that before he committed yet another crime.
I’m sorry she raised a loser, but her son is the exact reason the three-strikes law went into effect: to lock up habitual lawbreakers and act as a deterrent to others. Case closed.

* While I agree with the comments in the March 11 letters column, I have to point out that the success of the three-strikes law would not be in the incarceration of all the criminals, regardless of ethnicity, but the deterrence to criminals committing the third strike.
Our goal should be intervention and counseling at the point of the first and second strike, or even before, so that the repetition of criminal behavior is deterred.
We cannot afford the taxes required to house and feed huge percentages of the adult population during their most potentially productive years.
