Memo to ABC and Churchill Downs: Please spare us another Kentucky Derby with Dave Johnson as the announcer.

In Saturday’s race, Menifee was closing furiously, Prime Timber was picking off horses in the stretch, and what we listeners were subjected to was Dave Johnson saying, “AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME!” without bothering to inform us who the “they” were.

Trevor Denman would not have missed the call.
