The city has begun removing abandoned shopping carts from all public right-of-ways and crushing the ones that don’t have store logos. The initiative was sparked by a state law passed this year that allows municipalities to rid public streets of the carts. So far, officials have taken 3,428 carts to the city yard; of those, 1,700 have been demolished and sold for scrap. Mayor Miguel A. Pulido Jr. is expected to meet with representatives of a grocers trade group to discuss quicker cart pickup service by stores.
