Director Chosen for Rabbinical School

Rabbi Richard Levy, head of the Hillel Council of Los Angeles and outgoing president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, has been named director of the School of Rabbinic Studies at Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles.

Levy’s appointment as the school’s first full-time director represents another step by the college toward the ordination of its first class of Reform rabbis in 2002. The Los Angeles campus opened in 1958 and is affiliated with the nation’s largest Jewish denomination, the liberal Reform movement. Levy, 62, will succeed Rabbi Sheldon Marder, 49, who has taken a position as rabbi at the San Francisco Jewish Home for the Aging.
