VENTURA — A house under renovation suffered extensive damage this weekend when several wood panels stacked next to a fireplace caught fire, engulfing the room, according to the Ventura Fire Department.
Mark Spencer, owner of the house at 8732 Neath St., was burning wood scraps about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when heat from the fireplace apparently ignited wood panels.
Spencer attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, but left the house and called firefighters when he realized the fire was too big to fight, the Fire Department said.
Twenty firefighters, four engines and one truck arrived to find the back of the house in flames, and extinguished the blaze.
Estimated loss was valued at $250,000.
