Plaschke’s Baseball Opinions Questioned
Bill Plaschke must be joking to omit 1960 from his list of 10 greatest World Series (Oct. 23). In perhaps the greatest David-and-Goliath series, Yankee immortals (Berra, Mantle, Maris, Ford, etc.) bludgeoned the overmatched Pittsburgh Pirates 16-3, 10-0 and 12-0 in three games, and outscored them for the series, 54-27. The Pirates squeaked out their victories by a total of seven runs, including their 10-9 victory in Game 7, when Mazeroski’s homer ended the series in the bottom of the ninth. There were 10 better than this?

Bill Plaschke thinks Orel Hershiser should be the next Dodger pitching coach (Oct. 22). Trying to fix the Dodgers’ dismal play by hiring Hershiser is like trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun. Besides, wasn’t Kevin Brown given his fat contract because of how well his presence molds pitching staffs? So much for that theory. Yes, Hershiser once wore a Dodger uniform. He also wore a Met uniform, an Indian uniform and, worst of all, the dreaded Giant uniform. Orel is nothing more than a well-traveled veteran. Come on, Bill, it is nice that you bleed Dodger blue, but please, put a Band-Aid on it!
