Troy Coach Surprised but Happy About Tennis Seeding

Troy High Coach Donna Judd was pleased and somewhat confused when she saw that her team was seeded second in the Southern Section Division II girls’ tennis playoff pairings.
“Wow, that’s great,” Judd said Monday. “I don’t know how we got that, to be honest. I don’t know what it was based on.”
If it was based on strictly on records, Troy (16-2) has a right to be seeded second, ahead of No. 3 Beverly Hills (15-2) and No. 4 Mater Dei (14-4) and behind Woodbridge (15-4). But if it was based on strength of schedule, Mater Dei has an argument.
Troy, ranked eighth in Orange County, lost to fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley on games and fourth-ranked Dana Hills, 10-8. The Warriors’ best victory came over 10th-ranked Sunny Hills. Mater Dei, the Division II defending champion, defeated sixth-ranked Corona del Mar, 10-8, seventh-ranked Laguna Beach, 15-3, and ninth-ranked Santa Margarita twice.
Defending champion Peninsula was seeded first in Division I. Newport Harbor (16-1), the county’s top-ranked team, was seeded second, Dana Hills (17-3) was third and Capistrano Valley (12-4) was fourth.
