Rio Mesa 15, Dos Pueblos 12--Senior running back Tom Saxey scrambled 99 yards down the right sideline for the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter at Rio Mesa.
The score was the longest run from scrimmage in Rio Mesa (3-7) school history.
Saxey lead Rio Mesa in rushing, gaining 101 yards in three carries, while teammate Mike Liranzo finished with 89 yards in 15 carries.
Before Saxey’s run, Dos Pueblos (3-7) had taken its first lead at 12-7 in the third quarter on Justin Salzman’s two-yard plunge up the middle. Salzman’s ensuing two-point attempt was stopped.
Rio Mesa opened the scoring in the first quarter on Pancho Tinoco’s four-yard run around right end at the two-minute mark. Saxey’s extra point put the Spartans up 7-0.
The season-ending victory snapped Rio Mesa’s six-game losing streak.
