Irish Beat No. 4 Buckeyes in Doherty Coaching Debut

David Graves sank a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer as Notre Dame Coach Matt Doherty made a successful debut in a 59-57 victory over No. 4-ranked Ohio State Tuesday night in the opening round of the Preseason NIT at Columbus, Ohio.
The Fighting Irish will next play Siena Thursday.
Troy Murphy led the Irish with 21 points. Scoonie Penn led the Buckeyes with 15.
Doherty, a member of North Carolina’s national championship team in 1982, was making his head coaching debut after lengthy assistant stints at Davidson and Kansas.
No. 16 Utah 76, Arkansas State 43--Nate Althoff scored 14 points and the Utes used a swarming defense to earn an easy Preseason NIT victory over the Indians at Salt Lake City.
The Utes will play the winner of tonight’s Penn-Kentucky game Friday.
No. 10 Arizona 88, Kansas State 69--The freshman backcourt duo of Jason Gardner and Gilbert Arenas combined for 28 points as Arizona won a Preseason NIT opener at Tucson.
Arizona will play host to New Mexico State Friday.
