Aoatoa Sualua rushed for 262 yards in 34 carries to pace Los Amigos High to a 27-22 victory over Rancho Alamitos Friday in a Garden Grove League opener at Garden Grove High.
Los Amigos led, 27-7, with 7:01 to play, but Rancho Alamitos, paced by the passing of Daniel Green, who completed 19 of 56 for 323 yards, brought the Vaqueros back to within one touchdown with 3:21 left in the game.
Victor Estrada contributed six points for Los Amigos on field goals of 36 and 47 yards.
Richard Dinh gained 55 yards in 11 carries and Tui Soifua gained 56 yards in 11 carries for Los Amigos.
Matt Hildreth of Rancho Alamitos made six receptions for 103 yards.
Coach Doug Case of Rancho Alamitos said before the game that his team would probably throw at least 40 passes. Daniel Green did that--and more.
He completed 19 of 56 passes for 323 yards.
And he almost rallied Rancho Alamitos in the final minutes. Starting at his own 20-yard line, he hit Hildreth with two quick passes to the 48-yard line.
After an incompletion, he completed another pass to Maurice Garcia on the 25-yard line.
But Green was sacked on the final play of the game as he faded back to pass.
