Senior running back Marquis Colvin scored five touchdowns and rushed for 264 yards in 23 carries to lead Villa Park to a 49-30 victory over Foothill in a Century League opener Friday night at El Modena High.
Foothill rallied to cut the lead to 42-30 with 10 minutes 58 seconds left in the game.
But Colvin answered with his fifth touchdown of the night, a two-yard run with 1:18 left, to put the Spartans ahead, 49-30. Villa Park is 4-2 overall.
Foothill (0-6) also had a strong running game.
Senior Skyler Champion led the way rushing for 183 yards in 27 carries. Junior DeJuan Smith added 166 yards in 11 carries.
But the 5 foot 10, 174-pound Colvin was the star.
“We started to get worried,” said Colvin. “But the offense had a little discussion [after Foothill’s last touchdown]. We had to win this game, this was our game.”
Foothill moved out to a 3-0 lead on a 28-yard field goal by Michael Whiddon with 4:05 left in the first quarter.
But Colvin answered with touchdown runs of 54 and 50 yards late in the first quarter, putting Villa Park ahead, 14-3.
Colvin then scored on a 27-yard run with 7:21 left in the second quarter to give the Spartans a 20-3 lead.
Villa Park then moved ahead 28-3 as quarterback John Henry Jackson connected with Bryan Arguello on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 5:57 left in the second quarter. Arguello also hauled in a pass from Jackson for a two-point conversion.
But Foothill cut the lead to 28-10 on a two-yard touchdown pass from Mike Castillo to Kurtis Katnik with one second left in the first half.
