Developer Proposes Major Retail Center

A Los Angeles developer has proposed to build a major retail center--anchored by a home improvement store and a discount department store--on 36 acres of land currently used for a swap meet.
The developer, Regency Realty Corp., has an agreement with the majority of owners of the property to build the project, said San Fernando City Administrator John Ornelas. The site is at the northeast corner of Arroyo Avenue and Glenoaks Boulevard.
“It’s a prime northeast Valley site,” Ornelas said. “In the next 90 days the developer will come back with specifics on what it will take to make it work and a list of tenants.”
The potential tenant list includes discount retailers Kmart, Target, Wal-Mart and Costco as well as home improvement retailers Home Depot and Home Base.
“The rest would be small stores, [a] fast-food restaurant, a gas station and a drugstore,” said City Councilman Silverio Robledo. “We don’t even have a major drugstore in San Fernando.”
Robledo said the developer has proposed to bring in either Walgreens or Rite-Aid.
In a separate development, Starbucks may be close to opening a coffee store in a 1,500-square-foot location at the Truman and Mission Plaza.
“Starbucks has been studying the site and in 30 to 60 days should finalize a plan,” Robledo said.
