Cubs Manager to Secure Baylor in Tangled Web

Atlanta batting instructor Don Baylor, a leading candidate for the Angel manager job, claims he doesn’t have a deal in place to manage the Chicago Cubs, but someone in Chicago sure seems to think he does.

An official announcement that Baylor has been named Cub manager, dated Nov. 1--the day after the World Series would end if it went seven games--was posted on a hidden spot on the Cubs’ team Web site Friday. A Chicago Tribune staffer came upon the material while researching a story on managerial candidates.

The information was removed by about 7 p.m. Friday.

Cub General Manager Ed Lynch on Saturday denied a deal was done, and the Cubs claimed a team official who wrote the release was merely planning for a possible announcement.
