Brock Named Coach of Avengers

Stan Brock, a former NFL player, was named coach of the Los Angeles Avengers for the team’s first Arena Football League season Monday. He will be introduced today at a news conference in Staples Center.

Brock coached the Portland Forest Dragons the last three arena league seasons. He took over at Portland as interim coach in 1997, then was named coach in 1998. He has a 12-24 record.

Last season, Portland was 7-7 and finished second to the Arizona Rattlers in the Western Division of the league’s American Conference.

As a player, Brock spent 16 years in the NFL as an offensive tackle--13 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, who picked him in the first round of the 1980 draft from Colorado, and three seasons with San Diego.

At Colorado in 1979, Brock was named to the Sporting News All-American first team and the All-Big Eight first team.

Besides introducing Brock, Casey Wasserman, team owner and president, will unveil the team’s home and away uniforms. The Avengers will begin play in April in the Western Division.
