Here are some reading activities, taken from the Sonora Elementary School Literacy Night, that parents can try with their children:

* Ask your child to tell you the “story” of his or her day at school. Share the pencil or pen with your child as you write the story, giving your child the opportunity to write letters and words that he or she knows. Try writing a new word or two together.

* Read parts of a book together several times. Look and listen for repeated patterns, pictures and rhymes in stories. Make predictions about what will happen next at certain key points in the story.

* Have your child retell a story he or she has read at school or home. Prompt him or her to have an appropriate beginning, middle and end. Older children should include important story elements, such as characters, plot, sequence and setting.
