Unfolding L.A. Opera Season

L.A. Opera’s new production of Saint-Saens’ “Samson et Dalila” (borrowed from San Francisco Opera) continues at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 135 N. Grand Ave., Sunday and Sept. 26 at 2 p.m., Wednesday and Sept. 18, 21 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. Denyce Graves sings the role of Dalila at all performances. As Samson, Placido Domingo sings Sept. 18, and American tenor Gary Lakes takes the role Wednesday and Sept. 21, 24 and 26. Lawrence Foster is the conductor, Nicolas Joel the stage director. $27 to $146.
The company’s revival of Donizetti’s “The Elixir of Love” opens Saturday night at 7:30, with repeats Sept. 14, 17, 22 and 25 at 7:30 p.m., and Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Making her company debut in the role of Adina is American soprano Ruth Ann Swenson; returning from the 1996 cast are Ramon Vargas as Nemorino and Thomas Allen as Dulcamara. Rodney Gilfrey is Belcore. American conductor John Keenan makes his company debut; L.A. Opera veteran Stephen Lawless is stage director. $27 to $146.
The opera season continues with “The Capulets and the Montagues” (Bellini), Oct. 13-31; “Hansel and Gretel” (Humperdinck), Dec. 8-21; “Faust” (Gounod), Jan. 19-Feb. 5; “Rigoletto” (Verdi), March 1-21; “La Rondine” (Puccini), April 15-May 5; and “Billy Budd” (Britten), June 3-17.
