Children’s Museum

Re “Bright New Place for Kids’ Stuff,” editorial, Sept. 9: We all want a new children’s museum in L.A.; however, the proposed site (at the corner of Los Feliz and Riverside) is far from the “perfect spot.” There are a number of better locations that would be much more accessible to children from less affluent neighborhoods in our city.
The traffic study for this site, which is 2 years old, was done on a Monday, not during the weekend when the heavy flow of traffic is continuous. Also, the study does not take into account the speed of the cars on Los Feliz--usually in excess of 45 mph--which poses safety concerns for children crossing at that intersection.
The museum would destroy a pleasant recreation area, including culturally significant trees planted in honor of Will Rogers in 1935, and overshadow an important historical landmark, the William Mulholland Fountain. The City Council seems frantic to spend the $9.4 million in bond money on this site as soon as possible; however, common sense dictates that we slow down and take another close look.
