The Tampa Bay Devils Rays, one victory shy of their total for last season, rewarded Manager Larry Rothschild, 45, with a contract extension through the 2001 season. The new pact extends Rothschild’s original three-year contract a year past its 2000 conclusion.
The Devil Rays are last in the AL East with a 62-82 record. Tampa Bay was 63-99 in its inaugural season.

New York Yankee third baseman Scott Brosius, whose father died Sunday, left the team to be with his family. Brosius, who played Sunday and Monday, was originally expected to leave for the funeral in Oregon following Thursday’s game in Cleveland.
Maury Brosius, 55, lost a lengthy fight to colon cancer. Two weeks ago, Brosius left the team for five days to be with his father.
After the funeral on Saturday in McMinnville, Ore., Brosius is scheduled to rejoin the Yankees in New York for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
