Regarding “Questions Smart Travelers Can’t Ask Often Enough” (Travel Insider, Aug. 29): The VISA and MasterCard Web sites offer ATM locations. For a trip to Belgium, I downloaded lists of ATM addresses in Bruges, Antwerp and Brussels. (You may have to try more than one spelling: Bruges is entered under its alternate spelling, Brugge.) The Internet addresses are https://www.mastercard .com/atm for MasterCard and, for VISA, https://www.visa.com/pd/atm /main.html.

Travelers should be aware that ATM use in Asia can be most difficult. In China, one would think Beijing would not be a problem. But several clients of my travel agency have had cards destroyed in the machine or not returned, or the card comes back without money coming out or in the wrong amount. Then the bank itself is of no service or help.
Recently I have found that in small towns in Japan, an ATM is not always available.
Consider carrying small amounts of traveler’s checks or U.S. currency. It’s also best to have yen with you, as converting is a slow process, especially in the small towns of Japan.
