A 38-year-old Ventura man was being held in Ventura County Jail on Monday after allegedly barricading himself in his apartment and falsely telling police he was holding a hostage at gunpoint.
Ventura police officers arrested Adam Vars after a 20-minute standoff that began shortly after 9 a.m., authorities said.
Vars was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail on suspicion of making terrorist threats and threatening a peace officer. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.
Authorities said Vars became upset after his landlord tried to evict him. When Ventura County sheriff’s deputies arrived, Vars refused to leave the Sheridan Way building, authorities said. Police also responded, and eight officers from both agencies arrested Vars, Police Sgt. Quinn Fenwick said.
“It turned out there was no hostage,” Fenwick said. “There was a man in the apartment. It turned out to be his friend who was helping him move.”
