It’s back to the drawing board for revisions to the campaign finance ordinance that has split the City Council for several months. The council voted 2 to 2 Tuesday night not to repeal the ordinance which limits campaign finance contributions to $1,000 and authorizes investigations into suspected campaign finance abuses. Member Lucille Kring suggested repealing the ordinance in August, but then voted against doing so last night.

After the vote, Kring directed the city attorney to again rewrite the ordinance for the council’s consideration. Kring said that possible revisions include changing the prosecution of suspected campaign finance wrongdoing from criminal to civil and allowing candidates to rectify mistakes within a reasonable amount of time.
