SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA / A news summary : Boy, 7, Hospitalized After Pit Bull Attack

A pit bull attacked a 7-year-old boy and a woman in the backyard of a house Thursday, authorities said.

The boy was airlifted to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, where he underwent surgery for four hours and was in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The boy was playing with another boy in the friend’s backyard in the 12700 block of Woodcock Avenue near three pit bulls that were not tied up, said Jackie David, a spokeswoman for city Animal Services.

The boys were not under adult supervision when one of the dogs attacked the boy about 9:30 a.m., she said. A woman who rescued the child was bitten on her left arm.

The boy was bitten on his upper right arm and his elbow was dislocated, David said. He also suffered several small puncture bites in both legs, she said.

The three dogs were taken to the West Valley Animal Shelter, where they will probably be euthanized, David said.
