Cal Lutheran’s Rucinski Is Up to Old Tricks

Alix Rucinski scored three goals, including the winner for the Cal Lutheran women’s soccer in a 3-2 victory over Whittier College in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game on Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
Rucinski capped the hat trick with a goal in the 83rd minute on a six-yard shot off a cross from Leilani Green. Rucinski, who has 11 goals, also scored in the 27th and 34th minutes.
Rucinski’s first goal tied it, 1-1, after Whittier’s Klajie Gerard scored in the 21st minute. Rucinski’s second goal gave the Regals (5-3) a 2-1 edge before Sheri Miyashiro converted for Whittier two minutes later.
It was Cal Lutheran’s 43rd consecutive SCIAC victory, dating to 1991. The Regals are 97-1-1 in conference matches in that span.
MEN’S SOCCER
Cal Lutheran 5, Whittier 0--Scott Porter scored his first two goals and Jose Melgoza recorded two assists for the Kingsmen (5-1, 2-0) in a SCIAC game at Cal Lutheran.
Gary Cabanilla scored twice for the Kingsmen, who have never lost to Whittier (0-3-1, 0-2). Cal Lutheran is 23-0-1 against Whittier.
The Master’s 6, Concordia 1--Ricardo Bradbury scored a goal in each half in a nonconference match at Master’s.
Bradbury helped the Mustangs (5-7) to a 3-1 lead at halftime with a goal just before the break. Anthon Brueggeman and Doug Matteson had first-half goals, in the 16th and 28th minutes.
MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Golden West Invitational--Jorge Lopez finished second and Eduardo Diaz placed third to help Glendale win the meet at Central Park in Huntington Beach.
Lopez clocked 20:19 over the four-mile course and Diaz ran 20:26 as Glendale had 38 points. San Diego Mesa was second in the 13-team meet with 55 points.
BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Lagoon Invitational--Senior Josh Spiker of Ventura won his third race of the season without a loss, clocking 14:55 over the three-mile course that looped around the lagoon at UC Santa Barbara.
Spiker ran the first mile in 5:02 and two miles at 9:52.
Junior Roberto Contreras of Nordhoff finished second in 15:43 in the nonscoring meet.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Righetti Invitational--Sophomore Kristen Anderson placed first and senior Katie London finished second to help Westlake win the team title in the meet at Waller Park in Santa Maria.
Anderson clocked 19:22 over the three-mile course and London ran 19:57 as the Warriors totaled 35 points.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Burroughs 14, La Serna 13--Jason Falitz scored on a penalty shot in overtime to lift Burroughs (14-3) in a fifth-round game of the Rowland tournament. Falitz scored 10 goals.
In an earlier game, Burroughs defeated Bell Gardens, 16-9, behind eight goals by Falitz.
Flintridge Prep 16, Claremont 5--Sam Tyre scored four goals for Flintridge Prep (6-5) in a fifth-round game of the Rowland tournament at Brea-Olinda.
Royal 13, Bonita 10--Derek Anderson had five goals and Justin McClure had three for Royal in the fifth-place game of the Rowland tournament.
Crescenta Valley 11, Malibu 6--Carlos Pelayo scored two goals to help the Falcons win the Zack Hahn tournament at Calabasas. Pelayo scored 16 goals in four games and was selected the tournament’s most valuable player.
