U.S. Offers Reward of $25,000 in Case of Missing Laptop

WASHINGTON — The State Department offered a $25,000 reward Wednesday for anyone who helps recover a missing State Department laptop computer that may contain highly classified information.
The laptop, thought to hold information on nuclear proliferation, was reported missing from the department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research in January, and investigators have not discovered whether it was stolen for its contents or merely for its value as hardware.
The State Department said in a statement that it would ensure complete confidentiality for anyone who provided information on the computer, but spokesman Richard Boucher declined to say if it could ensure immunity from prosecution.
The laptop is a black Dell with a five-digit serial number ending in the letter Q. The number is on a sticker at the back of the computer, near the ports.
