Pedestrian Challenges in Ventura
* I’ve lived in Ventura for 10 years and there’s a lot to like about this town. But there are a number of things that puzzle me. One of them is the difficulty going from place to place, on foot, in the area of upper Main Street.
Have you ever been at Kinko’s or Barnes & Noble Bookstore and needed to go to Firehouse Plaza? And wanted do it on foot? Swimming the English Channel might be easier. Those with nothing but time to kill should enjoy the pedestrian route as approved by city planners.
Begin by walking west on Main to Donlon Street. When you hit the other side, turn 90 degrees north, push the pedestrian crossing button and wait for the signal.
This, the major leg of the journey, is divided into two segments: one from the south sidewalk to the center island and the other from the island to the north sidewalk. When the light beckons, move quickly. If the crossing signal flashes a red warning as you approach the island--and it will--take refuge on the median.
While you are there, remember: You will reach the other side. When you have reached the other side, turn 90 degrees east and, again, wait for the signal. When it is safe, proceed east across the freeway offramp knowing that this is your final hurdle (unless there is a fire).
