Local and international Rotary Club members have donated $20,000 toward the restoration of E.P. Foster Library.
As the fund-raising campaign wound down, one last donation came in--a matching grant from four local rotary chapters and one in Mexico. With the latest award, the library campaign raised $460,000 toward new books, desks and other equipment.
“We’ve been sending the [Ensenada-Baja Rotary chapter] equipment for schools and hospitals,” said Jim Word, past president of the Rotary Ventura East chapter. “We’ve sent ambulances, firetrucks and tractors. They wanted to reciprocate.”
Each club has a district, including the Mexican chapter, and everyone belongs to Rotary International, he said. The international organization agreed to match what the chapters and districts raised.
Local groups gave $2,500, as did the Mexico chapter. And two districts matched the amount, creating a $10,000 grant. The International Rotary gave the rest, Word said, adding that he expected the money to come through in the next three weeks.
