Interest Rates

Re “Our Hopes for 2000,” editorial, Jan. 2: What magic has Alan Greenspan performed? The best I have seen is keeping his hands off the interest rate. While he adds hundreds of dollars to the banking industry from even an ordinary citizen, the Republican Party and its nominee beg to have the taxes of the wealthy reduced. If interest rates are the only way of controlling inflation then we should apply the increase to lowering the national debt and not to enriching the banking interests.
