Crane figured to be the sixth or seventh man at Lakewood Artesia, but instead transferred to Ocean View, where he had an outstanding season. A powerful leaper, he was equally adept at playing forward and guard. He averaged 21 points and 6.9 rebounds.

Strong, physical, with a deft shooting touch, Hanour rebounded with the best in the county, averaging 9.7 rebounds. And he could score too, averaging 25.7 points. Had Laguna Beach not forfeited 11 games, his accomplishments might have been more recognized around the county.

James was a powerful force for the Garden Grove League champions. He made 54.8% of his field-goal attempts and usually saved his best for big games. In three postseason games, he shot 59.4% from the field, averaged 11 rebounds and 18.7 points.

Quick with a good shooting touch, Kaatz was the heart and soul of the Vikings. He could post up or shoot a jumper, while averaging 25.7 points and 10.3 rebounds. He was named the most valuable player in the Sunset League for leading Marina to a share of the league title.

MacGinnis led the youthful Spartans, averaging 18 points, and made 53% of his shots from the field, including a remarkable 89 of 160 three-point attempts. He had a knack for creating open shots and was solid from the free-throw line, converting 76.9% of his attempts.

Nazeri shared South Coast League most valuable player honors with teammate Chris Parish and was the catalyst for perhaps the most overlooked county team. He made 80.4% of his attempts from the line and was “the ultimate competitor,” Charger Coach Todd Dixon said.

The 5-foot-7 Freeway League most valuable player was steady in guiding the Warriors to as high as No. 3 in the county. It seemed as if Raco was always around the ball, and he averaged 7.7 assists. He scored 11 points and had 11 assists in a 68-41 victory over Sunny Hills.

Last season’s county player of the year was surrounded by a better cast this season. But Scoggin remained a big contributor, averaging 13.2 points and 3.4 assists. He took 203 three-point shots and made 34%. He loved a challenge and often responded with his best outings.

Football or basketball? This multi-talented athlete, a Times’ Orange County football selection, could do it all at either quarterback or shooting guard. Whieldon averaged 26.4 points and six rebounds. He is grappling with deciding which sport he wants to continue playing in college.

Wilber made 51% of his shots, including 40.8% of his three-point attempts. He averaged 13.2 points and three assists. He scored 23 points in the Wildcats’ 66-51 loss to San Diego Serra in a Southern California Regional Division II playoff game.
