GOING EXTREME

Irvine Lake, closed to fishing until the Nov. 10 trout-season opener, hosts a wakeboarding and freestyle motocross event Friday through Sunday.

The Right Guard Xtreme Sport Ride and Slide Tour is making its fourth and final stop of the year. The freestyle motocross competition features top riders such as Tommy Clowers of La Mesa, Brian Deegan of Canyon Lake and Trevor Vines of Riverside who will tackle a course that includes six to eight intertwining jumps, launch ramps, mounds and ditches. Riders will be judged on the difficulty of tricks and will compete for a $40,000 purse.

The $30,000 wakeboarding event, featuring Matt Staker of Orlando, Chase Heavner of Winter Park, Fla., and Scott Byerly of Casselberry, Fla., will give competitors two runs at a course that includes two sliding apparatuses. Wakeboarders use the sliders to perform stunts similar to skateboarders.

Practice sessions Friday start at 10 a.m. and admission is free. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under on Saturday and Sunday. The competition will be interspersed with live music. Among the bands scheduled to appear are Pharcyde (Saturday) and Dial 7 (Sunday).

OPEN WATER SWIMMING

Steven McLeod, a former Trabuco Hills swimming standout, finished 13th in the men’s division of the 5,000 meter World Open Water Championships Monday in Honolulu.

McLeod, finished in 59 minutes 51 seconds. Russia’s Evgueni Bezroutchenko was first in 59:18.
