Dodger Fans Aren’t Sold on Think ‘Who?’ Week

Well, after the hiring of Jim Tracy as the new Dodger skipper, I guess Kevin Malone finally got the right answer.
Now if only I knew what the question was.

With the naming of Jim Tracy as the new manager of the Dodgers, the pitiful situation under Fox ownership continues. From all accounts, the No. 1 prerequisite for the position was an ability to get along with Kevin Malone. Like the Yankees under CBS in the ‘70s, the Dodgers are doomed to mediocrity as long as unqualified individuals are in charge.

In Jason Reid’s Nov. 1 article, Kevin Malone prefers Jim Tracy as Dodger manager “because of his reserved approach and willingness to toe the company line.” Rick Down apparently is a more enthusiastic guy who provides a spark, and is the choice of the players, two very good reasons why I prefer Down, but I’d be making a baseball decision, and not a corporate one. The Dodgers certainly wouldn’t want to make a good baseball decision; why would Fox want to change their ways now?

Jim Tracy or Dick Tracy, does it really matter? The Dodgers still have the worst team defense, no speed, Carlos Perez is still pitching and worst of all Kevin Malone is still making decisions. At least Dodger fans can continue the rich tradition of getting to the game late, leaving early and in between doing the wave and playing with beach balls. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Bob Daly favored Jim Tracy’s “low-key approach,” and the “main qualification” to be Dodger manager is the “ability to coexist with Kevin Malone.”
The main qualification for any Dodger manager is to win baseball games. Let’s hope Tracy, unlike Davey Johnson, isn’t so low key that no runs score in an inning with runners at first and third and nobody out. As for Malone, I’m a fan and I can barely coexist with him.

Bobby Valentine is smarter than a lot of people give him credit for--staying 3,000 miles away from any possibility as Dodger manager. Who is this guy named Tracy? The only Tracys I’m familiar with were named Spencer and Dick! I give him about one year, almost normal for new Dodger managers these days.

The new Dodger manager gets hired not because of his winning tradition at the helm of a major league ballclub, his brilliant strategy or his proven ability to command the respect of his players. And he certainly wasn’t hired because he has the high regard of the fans. No way. The new Dodger manager is hired because he’ll be a yes-man for Sheriff Malone.
That’s just great. All the Dodgers need now is to unveil a furry mascot for next year to convince me to pass on my season-ticket renewal.

When I heard Wednesday morning that “mild-mannered” Jim Tracy would be the Dodgers’ next manager, a thought occurred to me. Didn’t the Dodgers already try this strategy with Glenn Hoffman?
