Riverside North 14, Temecula Valley 13--A failed two-point conversion proved costly for Temecula Valley as the Golden Bears lost in the Division V semifinal at Riverside College
The host Huskies (9-4) went up, 14-7, on a 79-yard pass play from sophomore quarterback Dion Morton to his twin, Damon, in the third quarter. Damon Morton finished with nine receptions for 171 yards and rushed for 77 yards in six carries. Dion passed for 195 yards on 11-of-19 passing.
Temecula Valley got the equalizer with 1:28 to play on a 16-yard pass from Brian Gessel to Robin Owens. Coach Bud Kane called a timeout and opted to try for a two-point conversion, but a pass intended for Kyle Vincent at the goal line was knocked away.
The Golden Bears (9-4) recovered the onside kick by Andrew Torrance at the North 49-yard line. Temecula Valley worked the ball to the 22, the key play a 22-yard run by Josh Mohr, but with 17 seconds remaining a 39-yard field goal by Matthew Locklin was wide left.
“We thought we had a shot at winning the game and then we had another shot with the field goal,” Kane said. “We’ll probably toss around the play call, but I don’t regret going for it.”
