French voters will have the choice of voting for a black president for the first time when elections are held next year.
The Radical Left Party, or PRG, has chosen Christiane Taubira, a female politician from French Guiana, on the northeastern coast of South America, as its candidate for the 2002 elections.
“The choice of the Radical Left Party is a bold and splendid move to rise above prejudice and bias,” Taubira told French radio.
The PRG makes up part of Prime Minister Lionel Jospin’s ruling leftist coalition.
