Adoption Ban Eased; 49 Find Homes Abroad

Pressured by countries such as the U.S., Spain and Israel, Romania allowed 49 orphaned children to be adopted by foreign families.
The adoptions were granted despite a ban imposed in October at the request of the European Union. The EU, which Romania hopes to join by 2007, had criticized the country’s treatment of orphans.
At least 3,500 adoption cases were believed to be in the system when the ban was imposed. Demand for Romanian children led to the pressure to allow adoptions to resume.
