The death toll from the overturning of a gasoline tanker in eastern Uganda rose to 46, after 11 more victims died of their injuries, police said.
Police spokesman Asoumani Mugenyi said the tanker’s driver lost control Thursday trying to pass another truck. The victims apparently were from among people in a truck and passenger van that stopped after the accident and villagers who went to the scene to salvage the gasoline, which ignited.
The latest victims died in Bugiri hospital. Sixty-four people remained hospitalized with burns.
Mugenyi said it was not clear how the fuel ignited.
