Motorist Dies When Van Hits Tree, Burns

A motorist died Sunday when his car slammed into a tree and burst into flames, authorities said.
Douglas Leroy Bates, 55, was driving west on Jeffrey Road about 7:30 a.m. when his 1996 Chrysler van jumped a curb and hit the tree, said Mark Reeves, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. Bates, of Irvine, died at the scene, Reeves said.
