Detainee Calls Off His Hunger Strike

A man arrested in the terrorism sweep ended his hunger strike, and the government agreed to drop a request to force-feed him.
Malek Mohamed Seif, 36, was detained in Phoenix after the Sept. 11 attacks but does not face terrorism charges. He faces 41 counts of making false statements, Social Security fraud and mail fraud, with a tentative trial date of Jan. 29.
He stopped eating after his arrest Oct. 28 and lost at least 30 pounds, said his attorney, Tom Hoidal. Last week, however, Seif began eating small portions of fruit and yogurt because he did not want to be force fed, Hoidal said.
