5 Found in Container Get Permission to Stay

Five refugees who survived a journey in a freight container across Europe that left eight other people dead will be allowed to stay in Ireland, the government said.
“These people have suffered enough, and any applications they make will be very sympathetically dealt with,” Prime Minister Bertie Ahern said. Justice Minister John O’Donoghue said that if the survivors--three Turks, an Algerian and an Albanian--did not qualify for refugee status, they would be allowed to stay on humanitarian grounds.
The survivors were being treated for respiratory problems and hypothermia. Doctors said their conditions were critical but improving.
